Collaboration with Iredale Pedersen Hook Architects to craft the riverine landscape around Bilya Koort Boodja, Centre for Nyoongar Culture and Environmental Knowledge. The interpretive centre in Northam protects, shares and celebrates the rich Aboriginal culture and environment in the region.
Elevated off the ground, the interpretive centre hovers above the floodplain on the foreshore of the Avon River. Shrubs blanket the ground beneath the building, and modest, naturalistic planting around the entries and structure soften and conceal where the architecture meets the land. Restoring trees and endemic planting to the riverine edge curates a layered vista of the river, while sunlight filtering through the timber screens cast patterns of light and shadow across the grassy landscape. A community gathering space is sculpted with concrete—a yarning circle to share and learn.
