A two-storey residence for a couple with adult children and grandchildren. A duality of masonry and lightweight construction on a steeply sloping site in the foothills of Perth.
A carefully orchestrated arrival sequence to Bromfield House amplifies the experience of the site. Hunkered down in the hill, only the folded roofscape is visible from the street; the light diffused through a triangular section of translucent roof that serves as a welcome light and echoes the city beyond. The tent-like roof is draped over an earthy-coloured brick base that anchors the house to the hill. Walking across a gridded mesh bridge, the entry is slowly revealed as the hillside falls away and the house becomes a lightweight construction. Once inside, the corridor leads into the living area that opens to a sweeping, panoramic view.
